Could you talk of any example from the history where this idea of clusters thrived or doomed? Is there any good story you can pick out?

Look, for history, I think one of the things that we notice is that period of the Islamic Golden Age in which Baghdad becomes so important to innovation.

This is a period in which most of Europe is going through what's referred commonly as the Dark Ages, the rollback of progress following the fall of the Roman Empire.

But in the Islamic Golden Age, Muslims are encouraged to read the Koran So you've got higher literacy rates in many Muslim countries than you do in many European countries.

You've got a paper factory in Baghdad, and so you've got bound books.

Baghdad's House of Wisdom becomes both a library and also a centre for scholarship, a bit like the Library of Alexandria we mentioned before.

The Golden Age of Islam is a term and concept that often comes up when discussing intellectual history and the Middle Ages.

And while there are several issues with the phrase and its meaning that we can discuss at some other time, it does indeed point to a period and context of great intellectual flourishing in the early Islamic world.

And there are few things as strongly associated with this era as the so-called Bayt al-Hikmah, the House of Wisdom in Baghdad, which, at least according to popular belief, supposedly served as a center for the translation movement, scientific and philosophical activity, and development.

And through the Islamic Golden Age, this knowledge trickled into medieval Europe.

But the second route is a much more direct jump from India to modern Europe, isn't it? It involves the British in the 1700s.

Yes, and this is such a fascinating moment of cultural collision.

That Hellenistic synthesis provided the cultural and linguistic infrastructure that the Roman Empire later absorbed.

It provided the philosophical framework that early Christianity used to articulate its theology, and it preserved classical knowledge that became a foundational element of the Islamic Golden Age.

The borders faded, but the intellectual revolution permanently altered the trajectory of human thought.

It's fascinating how human ambition can reshape the globe like that.
