But could the trade war push Canada to go so far as to join the European Union? That's the very question at the heart of a recent piece from journalist Ishan Tharoor, global affairs columnist at The New Yorker.

He joins me now with more.

Ishan, welcome.

You know, Canada has effectively become the kind of canary in the coal mine when it comes to thinking through the new world that we live in.

And that is really striking when you consider for how long Canada has just been, you know, the closest buddy and partner of the United States.

Ishaan Tharoor is a global affairs columnist for The New Yorker.

He spoke with a former colleague of his in recent days who's now editorial director at Nepal's largest media company.

He told Tharoor about the difficulties in accessing the affected area.

I think this is a really interesting segue because, um, in some ways the Icelandic model might present a, a, you know, some- one of, one of the potential, um, opportunities short of full accession that we may see Canadian politicians discussing with their European counterparts in the coming months.

Um, so the article is by Ishaan Tharoor, and he makes the case that it's not really a question of whether Canada is about to join the EU.

It certainly isn't, and there's all kinds of hurdles and barriers between, uh, where Canada is now and full membership of the EU, geography not least among them.

But that being the case, there's the, the fact that there's a serious argument with a lot of serious people involved about, well, what would it look like for Canada to join the EU is already, you know, a signal of the major tide shifts.
