Isaac Burns Murphy

His name was Oliver Lewis.

And once I started to look into the history of the Black Jockeys, not just Oliver Lewis, but Isaac Murphy, Jimmy Wingfield, Babe Hurd, it just continued to unfold.

And the more it unfolded, the more inquisitive and the more curious I became.

So I wanted to really dissect that history and do a deep dive to see just how deep and how far their history extended and the importance of what they did.

...

if, if you, you guys out there don't know about Isaac Murphy, uh, he is really one of the, I think the only Black athlete-

An amazing character

... to appear on cards from the 1800s.

Um-

Let's announce it today.

Carl and I are gonna do an episode on, uh, Isaac Murphy together.

The, uh, the horse racing season in full swing in this side, on this side of the world now.

My goodness.

Maybe it's my Isaac Murphy Goodwin Champion card.

All that he went through.

Born into slavery.

Ended up being one of the wealthiest people, let alone one of the wealthiest black men in his lifetime.

Born into slavery and then one of the wealthiest people.

My goodness, what a story Isaac Murphy has.

There's so many cool cards in my collection.
