Turning to food access, a Dallas map shows why grocery shopping can look very different depending on which side of Interstate 30 you live on.

The city's 2024 database counted 858 places selling groceries or food items, though the grocery landscape has changed since then.

The imbalance is clear.

Southern Dallas has roughly 45% of residents, many of them Black and Hispanic, but less than a third of grocery stores sit south of Interstate 30.

In those southern areas, more than 85% of food shops are gas stations, pharmacies, or dollar stores, which carry more limited options than a full-line grocery store.

Angus Sanders, founder of Feed Oak Cliff, said those stores are not a substitute for bigger stores with broader food choices.
