How has an intersectional lens influenced the way you design, conduct, and interpret research?

Yeah, I had the privilege of working with Dr. Linda West and developing a framework called the Intersectionality Research for Trans Health Justice.

And I think you could take that same framework and apply it to any health justice research.

And actually, I have.

Welcome back to another episode of Thriving in Intersectionality.

Today, I'm here with my guest, Kim Perrano.

But as always, before I bring Kim in, I'm going to ground this in the word intersectionality.

I mean, what professional sports leagues must be the most racist places on earth then? Let's say transforming, trans-forming fitness.

Intersectionality is a framework.

Oh, shut up.

But Janine came up here and she was doing a lot of prep to get us thinking in our minds of being creative.

Intersectionality is your layers of personhood.

There's dimensions to all of you.

There's dimensions to all of us.

Can you explain that to me? Well, I can because it's a fad.

And the difference between inclusivity and intersectionality are light years away.

Intersectionality is essentially offended Olympics.

So you get a checkmark.

I'm black, I'm a woman, and I'm a lesbian, and I'm a one-legged pirate.

Therefore, my oppression meter is so full that I need special accommodations for not just being a woman, but because I'm black, because I'm a lesbian, and I'm a one-legged pirate.

Therefore, there are special considerations, and intersectionality is not inclusivity.

Intersectionality divides people up by their oppression Olympics.

So I have the trigger point as a starting point, and then I, I created one thing that I'm using intersectionality in two different ways.

So there is an initial intersectionality.

What is inter- intersectionality? Intersectionality is, first of all, um, the different layers of identities and characteristics of human beings or society that they are piling up, so they are overlapping.

And those overlapping identities, they also create certain types of discrimination.

Someone can be, uh, can be an immigrant and can be Black and can be, uh, lower income, and all those things combined is also creating different types of discrimination.
