They are called the Gamburtsev Subglacial Mountains, named after the Soviet geophysicist Grigoriy Gamburtsev, and they were first detected in the late 1950s during the International Geophysical Year when Soviet scientists conducted seismic surveys across the interior of East Antarctica and discovered anomalous signals suggesting a massive buried mountain range.
