Mark ClattenburgGUEST
14:47
So therefore, the ball comes up off Anderson onto a Brighton defender who clears the ball onto his teammate's hand The law is clear.
Mark ClattenburgGUEST
14:57
The recommendation from IFAB is clear that a penalty should not be awarded.
Mark ClattenburgGUEST
15:03
So I don't understand where Keith was coming from.
Mark ClattenburgGUEST
15:07
Unless he's seen a different video to what I am, or he's reading different laws of the game of what the Premier League are trying to interpret, then I'm not sure why he thinks this is a handball when it clearly came from a teammate.
Bobby MaddenGUEST
15:23
And if you see the still image, you see the hand out here.
Bobby MaddenGUEST
15:26
And yeah, you would say that's a punishable handball.
Bobby MaddenGUEST
15:29
But when it's come from a teammate, IFAB, Premier League, UEFA, everyone is clear that it can't be punished as a handball offence.
Bobby MaddenGUEST
15:39
I think it actually goes back to a qualification playoff match about 12, 14 years ago in Bosnia, where Filip Bric was the referee.
Flav BatemenHOST
19:35
Rule...
Flav BatemenHOST
19:36
Law 12, the IFAB...
Flav BatemenHOST
19:40
No, pulling an opponent's shirt inside the box is never legally allowed under any circumstances.
Dan CookHOST
19:45
It's a bit like the offside thing.
James SharmanHOST
49:25
apparently
Jimmy BrennanHOST
49:25
IFAB, though,
James SharmanHOST
49:26
was against it.
James SharmanHOST
49:28
Now, the stats that they were given that the trial had led to a 54% reduction in offside decisions and 13 additional goals across the 112 matches.
JamesHOST
32:36
So that season is now finished.
JamesHOST
32:38
So IFAB have now kind of decided they probably don't want to pursue this based on evidence gained from what's happened in that league this year.
JamesHOST
32:45
So just read some of this out.
JamesHOST
32:46
This is from statistics from the BBC's website.
JamesHOST
32:50
So the IFAB's football and technical panels made up of former players, coaches and referees were told that the trial had led to a 54% reduction in offside decisions.
JamesHOST
33:00
and 13 additional goals across 112 matches.
JamesHOST
33:05
Yay.
GillyHOST
36:02
Now...
GillyHOST
36:03
I don't know if I saw something on the build-up to the season on Sky that was incorrect or what have you, but IFAB banned that.
GillyHOST
36:12
Even if the broadcasters are getting a feed, they are not allowed to broadcast it.
GillyHOST
36:16
The Premier League are petitioning to get IFAB to change that so that they can broadcast the decision-making process, but they are not allowed.
LukeHOST
36:24
Would that be a good thing, Don?
GillyHOST
36:27
I think so.
Michael NormantonHOST
3:43
It would have taken an awful lot to convince me otherwise, I suppose.
Michael NormantonHOST
3:47
The only sort of new bit, I suppose, that I really learned was that about them playing out live audio, they're not allowed to do it because of FIFA and IFAB rules.
Michael NormantonHOST
3:55
They're not allowed to, like, we're not allowed to hear the referees mic'd up as they are in rugby and stuff.
Dan MoylanHOST
4:00
Right.
Michael NormantonHOST
5:05
Would you believe it?
Chris MackHOST
5:07
The one time that they released the Liverpool one where the goal actually wasn't offside and they said, well done, good process.
Chris MackHOST
5:14
So I don't think they ever will, even if the IFAB rolls a lie for it.
Chris MackHOST
5:19
Yeah.
ReganHOST
24:52
Yeah, well, I want to give credits to Emily Keogh for posting it.
ReganHOST
24:57
And the IFAB who set out the rules, their rule states, what happens if a player is hit on the hand or arm by a ball from a teammate's kick or header? The rule states this is not a handball unless the ball goes directly into the opponent's goal or the player immediately scores afterwards.
ReganHOST
25:18
In which case, a direct free kick is awarded to the other team.
BradHOST
25:24
So by the laws there,
Keith ParryGUEST
18:58
In football, that's still not the case.
Keith ParryGUEST
19:01
We've contacted the lawmakers of the game, so IFAB and FIFA, and asked them why they would not introduce temporary concussion substitutions.
Keith ParryGUEST
19:09
And their response makes sense to a degree because they say that they believe the safest way is to have a concussion sub where they're taken out of the game totally.
Keith ParryGUEST
19:18
But as you say, if you're a player, and we said earlier that it could be the medical staff saying, okay, we think they're all right, put them back on.
Keith ParryGUEST
20:20
But I think for past generations, it's a real challenge.
Keith ParryGUEST
20:23
And we see that now in some of the cases that they're bringing against some of the governing bodies of their sports for not looking after them.
Rhys GrangerHOST
20:30
Yeah, I went to the dark side refereeing and IFAB don't know whether Arthur or Martha when it comes to rule changes.
Rhys GrangerHOST
20:36
So I don't believe a word they say when it comes to that.
Michael StewartHOST
12:43
And that's why I think it is important whether a strike is on target or off target, because then there is a definitive demarcating line between what could be attributed as a goal or not a goal because if we're saying now that a shot towards the goal but not on target and deflects and goes on the goal can still be chalked off well then how far off target does it come before you say well actually it's a cross not a shot and that's where it becomes very subjective and that's why I think it is important that it should stick to on target or off target.
Michael StewartHOST
13:22
Hence why Mende, and I can tell you right now, the officials didn't know definitively if That was the case in regards to if it's off target, should it stand? They had to go to IFAB.
Michael StewartHOST
13:36
Right.
Michael StewartHOST
13:37
Apparently, what came back was there isn't a clear definition in the wording.
Michael StewartHOST
13:42
So there's been a bit of a fuzzy interpretation.
Darrell CurrieHOST
13:45
So our referees wanted to go to IFAB to get a bit of confirmation here.
Darrell CurrieHOST
13:48
Is that what you're suggesting? Yes, that's what happened.
Darrell CurrieHOST
13:50
Right, so what confuses me out, did you see the one in the English Premier League a few weeks back? And it was Harry Maguire, Man United goal, which was allowed to stand because the shot was off target and he was offside.
Tom MaherPANELIST
2:22
I'll happily pass this over to someone else.
Tom MaherPANELIST
2:25
Yeah, I think Arcel got away with one a little bit on this decision because, yeah, I was going into the IFAB laws, as you do.
Tom MaherPANELIST
2:37
Just a lovely little Sunday afternoon activity for me.
Tom MaherPANELIST
2:40
um but essentially in the ifab laws of the game law 12 a handball is generally not penalized if the ball hits a player's hand or arm directly from a teammate's kick or header so it shouldn't have been a penalty really i think Arsenal fans will be hanging on to that word generally in that, you know, maybe there's some cases where it isn't, but I think potentially they're more kind of like if there's a bigger distance between two players.
