So like I don't do hard stage designs until I'm on the ground at any range a given year because props availability changes, what areas of the range we can use can change like the day of based on like some random local restriction what targets are available can change what I do have in my head is what sort of skills I want to test in totality at the match right so like I know I want to have like for example weak hand pistol shooting be part of a stage it's just where am I slotting that in to the stage I know for example like I'm going to require like shooting off a rooftop it's just like where are we positioning that on the stage so it's like I have over two decades of stages in my head and it's just picking those elements from a stage and assembling them into the particular range I'm working at at that moment.
LukeHOST
16:12
Yeah, and I think that's something that goes unrecognized even in a lot of other legacy shooting sports like USPSA and IDPA.
LukeHOST
16:21
Being a stage designer is actually pretty difficult unless you're a regular at that range and you're used to seeing the same bays every day.
LukeHOST

Edgar MillsHOST
21:13
I like it anyway.
Jeff KingHOST
12:56
I mean, I've done a lot of silly props that feel stupid.
Jeff KingHOST
13:00
I've dealt with, and then you get into the game of, uh, how to set that up so that it isn't game to a point of being because yeah there was one at um one of the nationals where you had to like get a teddy bear and put it into a box it at the end of the stage to activate blah blah blah well dudes would just jam it into their between their mag pouches and then just shoot free freehand only and you're like okay like i I don't want to be IDPA, but sometimes just fucking, hey, here's what you have to do.
Jeff KingHOST
13:40
You got to carry the thing in your weak hand and shoot with your strong hand.
Jeff KingHOST
13:44
That's it.
Nils JonassonGUEST

But Day of the Dot is definitely up there as well.

What did you think about the IDPA Nationals we just had this past couple of weeks ago?
Nils JonassonGUEST
8:22
It was a solid match.
Nils JonassonGUEST
8:24
There were some good takeaways.
Nils JonassonGUEST
8:25
I think for me, my biggest takeaway from that match was how leader-oriented the staff were.
Nils JonassonGUEST
8:34
So in IDPA Nationals in the past, in IDPA in general, they have had a tendency to be a little, almost like a...
Nils JonassonGUEST
8:42
Like the SOs are kind of out to get the shooters or penalize them.
Nils JonassonGUEST
8:46
And with a lot of the stuff being subjective back in the day, it was really easy to kind of mess with the shooters.
DrewPANELIST

Are you going to get yourself a cool shotgun vest for pheasant hunting? Of course.

But all of a sudden when something goes outside of the stage, the match director or the stage designer's plan of what the stage is… They get very upset and start looking for problems.
Tom NelsonHOST
49:03
Like I stopped shooting IDPA because there was an exploit in a stage.
