The IARC, the International Agency for the Research in Cancer, this is a UN organization, they had published a monograph saying that hot drinks were a probable carcinogen, meaning they gave it a class 2A designation.

And you're right in that most people, when they heard this, assumed coffee, except that at the same time that IARC did this thing about hot beverages, they also published a monograph saying that caff coffee was probably not a carcinogen.

So you had these dueling headlines where coffee is not a carcinogen, but hot beverages are.

And this is a little bit hard to reconcile in most people's heads.

Well, so interestingly enough, in this particular study, they didn't get into measuring it because the way this was done, they asked people, how do you like to drink your beverages? Do you like it very hot, hot, not hot at all, or do you prefer not to say? So it was very much based on self-report, which adds a degree of uncertainty there because you're relying on people to report how hot they drink their coffee and And of course, the first thing people are going to realize is like, well, you know, you might order a hot cup of coffee, but then you get distracted, you let it cool down.

You don't necessarily drink it at the temperature at which it was served to you.

Now, if you do want the number, if we go all the way back to IARC and their monograph, they had put a cutoff of 65 degrees Celsius, which is actually quite hot.

It can also induce anaphylaxis, and it is classified as carcinogenic by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, which is part of the World Health Organization.

So people are aware of this.
