His ultimate goal was to attack St. Petersburg from Sweden's territory in Finland and force concessions from the Russian.

But the Russian Baltic Fleet was able to defeat the Swedes in the Battle of Hoagland on the 17th of July 1788, meaning that the Swedish king's plans for an invasion of Ingria were sidelined, as were any Russian hopes of advances, after the later Battle of Svensksund in July of 1790, in which the Russians were in turn defeated themselves.

This forced both sides to conclude a peace treaty in August 1790 in which they returned broadly to the situation which prevailed prior to the two-year-long war.

Spurred on by these successes, Catherine's final military endeavor would be her war on Persia, in what is now referred to as the Persian Expedition of 1796.
