Indie sleaze

[laughs] I think you're the perfect guest for this podcast, and I'm gonna tell you why.

Number one, House of Jealous Lovers by The Rapture is a great, um, as you might know, we are in the midst of Bandsplain's indie sleaze arc, if you will.

Balls deep.

Balls deep.

That wasn't the exact, um, scheduling, but we had a little snafu.

Um, don't worry about it.

But I was like, "Oh, this is a great opportunity," because there is this whole other sect of indie sleaze that we're not gonna get too much into in our arc, but that is sort of the electronica, electro clash version that the DFA Records, sort of the, the space LCD occupies.

And The Rapture's House of Jealous Lovers was kind of like the first thing, right? Would you agree?

Okay.

Um, what else do I want to tell you about myself? Um, well, Bandsplain is in the midst of our indie sleaze arc.

That's-

I don't know when this comes out.

Hopefully it'll still be indie sleaze arc.

And I, much to my-

They might see themselves in his journey.

And the way he talks about Indie Sleaze nostalgia is intriguing, too.

It sounds like he's grappling with his identity in that space.

Yeah, he seems to reject the idea of fitting into any particular movement.

We also spoke to Janine Warren Who's written a book about, I don't know, it's, it's...

What do we call it? We call it Indie Sleaze down where Alex-

Indie Sleaze.

Yeah, absolutely.

And clarify Indie Sleaze for anybody who might not know what that means.

So Indie Sleaze covers a sort of, uh, uh, early, early to mid-noughties period of, of indie music.

So we're talking The Strokes, The Libertines, Bloc Party, all that kind of-

It's the w- the world began again with The Strokes, didn't it? And I know-

I miss? You'll remember this.

This is very like almost Indy Sleaze era.

Fred water.

Remember Fred water?

It's part of the culture and the community and the scene

... it's p- definitely part of the indie sleaze thing.

It is funny that it's, like, coming back in such a big way.

Pretty sick.

How in this, you know, d- d- in this decade that you deal with, how is it, how, you know, what's the characteristics of rock hair in that, in that period?

Or indie sleaze hair?

Yes.

Yeah, that's a weird record.

I mean, at the same time, you know, listening to N.E.R.D., at the same time, the whole Indie Sleaze, Rap Shard, DFA thing happening.

And we were doing dance music and we were an indie band and we're like, well, hang on.

What's this rare talking head song and Steve Miller song that everyone's ripping off? Okay.

And like, it was really fun.
