Indianisation

Today, I'm delighted to have our focus turn to India, where we are meeting with Vishnu Mohandas.

He's an associate professor of social work at the University of Delhi, and his work explores social work education in India, including questions of Indianization, decolonization, and the continuing influence of colonial legacies, amongst other things.

He's also written extensively on the changing direction and future of social work in India.

And I think we're incredibly lucky to have him kick off this new series.

Then I completed my MPhil, PhD and Indian Council of Social Science fellowship, postdoctoral fellowship from University of Delhi.

Since then, sir, I am teaching here.

Sir, I am also the General Secretary of Bharatiya Samajkariya Parishad, that is a national level association of social workers working towards decolonization and Indianization of social work.

And recently, sir, in the last year, I was nominated by University Grant Commission, that is the regulatory body of India.

That is exactly why it deserves suspicion.

Cultural change did not arrive as a complete package.

A population could obtain foreign beads, encounter imported religious concepts, participate in distant trading networks, and still bury its dead according to practices with much older local roots.

I think the old language of Indianization becomes especially misleading at this cemetery.

It makes cultural change sound like a civilizing force arriving from outside and reorganizing a passive population.
