And I told her about all the places we visited, and she listened pleasantly enough.

It was only when I mentioned that we toured one of the townships that Inga's face blanched and she said, "I've heard that people go to those places." She said, "That's such a touristy thing to do." Now, as many of you know, I'm sure, South African townships are residential areas on city outskirts that were created under apartheid to segregate Black and colored and Indian South Africans from white ones.

Even today, many townships remain marked by the brutal inequalities of that system, by overcrowding, by under-investment, and by poverty, of course, even as, of course, they also sustain strong networks of family and communal life.

As our guide that morning had walked us through the township called Langa, past desiccated rats, one-room tin shacks, and a preschool whose, quote-unquote, "library corner" consisted of a dozen dilapidated books and a photograph of an actual library.

That event, Brigadier General Dyer's indiscriminate shooting in the Jallianwala Bagh, is one of those moments where a single act of brutality turned a largely organised Congress into a mass movement demanding self-rule.

I do want to say that The issue of the makeup of the leadership of IDEC being largely Indian, South African Indian, has been spoken of in hushed tones, in corridors and so forth.

But I want to very quickly mention that it was also many Indian South African law-abiding people citizens, both in other services of the police and in IDAC themselves, that revealed some of the truths that have now shown of the wrong things that are taking place.
