Independent Investigation Unit

It involves the death of a man following a 911 call from the Chinupawakpa Dakota First Station about 305 kilometers west of Winnipeg.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba, or IIU, say they received the file on September 15th.

An IIU release states, Just after midnight back on November 22, 2024, a 911 call was made where a disturbance was heard.

The call was tracked back to Chinupawakpa.

It shouldn't.

Delveen found out during the rally that the Independent Investigation Unit will not be investigating Cassie's arrest.

APTN News confirmed this fact with an email response from the IIU, saying, quote, That's when Delveen set up a tent outside the police station.

I am going to sit here until the officer that beat my daughter is investigated.

Delvin says that she wants the officers that arrested Cassie suspended and a full investigation into her death.

As of right now, there is no confirmation that the Manitoba Independent Investigation Unit has opened a case regarding Cassie's death, and there's no word if the Brandon Police are investigating the case as a possible homicide.

And we reached out to Brandon Police about Cassie Delvin's death and her prior arrest.

In an email, a spokesperson responded, "As this remains an active and ongoing investigation, we will not be providing any further comment or additional details at this time." The spokesperson added, "All relevant information pertaining to the incident, including the publicly circulating video, has been forwarded to the Independent Investigation Unit for its consideration and assessment." [news jingle] Quebec is in the midst of an election campaign, a race someone from Kahnawake was apparently less than thrilled about.

The Mohawk community member was recently seen taking down a Parti Québécois campaign sign with a sledgehammer posted on Provincial Route 207 in Kahnawake, a First Nation which generally does not participate in either federal or provincial elections.

And as of yet, neither the PQ nor the Mohawk Council of Kahnawake have responded to our request for comment.

And the Swan Lake First Nation, the cop shot Duke, the family dog.

So a family from Swan Lake First Nation in Manitoba is frustrated with the province's independent investigations unit.

In 2025, an officer with the Manitoba First Nations Police Service shot and killed the dog.

This week, the IIU cleared the officer of any potential charges.

On October 8, 2009, the Manitoba legislature passed that recommendation into law.

It created the independent investigation unit built specifically so that what happened in Crystal Tommen's case couldn't happen again.

That's important because the inquiry didn't conclude that Manitoba needed better police officers.

It concluded that it needed a better system.

The loss Salhani's report had recommended took even longer to take effect than Baccama's case took to resolve.
