Independence

And it was there, in 2019, on a fateful Saturday night in April, when their life would change.

Good evening, everyone, and welcome to Truman High School Stadium in Independence, Missouri, home of the Kansas City Titans.

Tonight, the Kansas City Titans are taking on the— I got

an invite to go to a women's football game, and I was like, heck yeah.

In 1874, William Henry Jackson drew a charcoal portrait of Bridger based on a photograph taken in St. Louis in 1857.

The portrait was exhibited at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition in 1876, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

That summer, like everyone else in the country, Jim Bridger heard the news of Custer's disaster on the Little Bighorn River, or Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull's success, depending on how you looked at it.

The most famous battle of the American West happened just 30 miles from Fort C.F. Smith, where Jim Bridger's presence had been enough to protect soldiers from the Sioux and Cheyenne ten years before Custer led his men into a doomed fight.

He was 77 years old.

He was buried in the Watts Cemetery near his farm, and his neighbor, Stubbins Watts, remembered that the funeral drew a fairly large crowd for a country gathering.

In 1904, Bridger's remains were moved to Independence, Missouri, where a large monument was erected by General Grenville Dodge.

The portrait of Bridger, which had been displayed at the 1876 World's Fair, was later moved to the War Department, and then the Smithsonian.

Yeah

... and when we get to Independence, there's little, um, markers that show where Boggs lived.

Uh-huh.

And one of them is where Boggs was living when the Saints were kicked out in 1833.

That's where Ophelia's, like, the, the, the upscale restaurant in Independence is.

And then the other one's-

... and more church members gather to Jackson County, the tensions between the saints and the older settlers start to increase.

By August 1st, he receives this section here, 58, when Martin Harris is asked to be an example to donate his property, the rest of his acreage that he sold from his enormous farm, to buy land and establish Zion.

Then on August 2nd and 3rd, Sidney and Joseph are gathered with others to dedicate the land of Missouri for the gathering of saints and the temple site in Independence.

On August 7th, there's a funeral held for the first saint who passed away.

I don't know if you remember that Sister Knight, Polly Knight, wanted to die in Zion.

And William Becknell was one of these.

He's been doing it since 1827.

And he does it until the spring of 1833 from Independence, Missouri.

There's a natural harbor there.

Harry S. Truman was born in Grandview, Missouri.

His home when he was elected is located in Independence, Missouri, which is part of the National Park Service.

His presidential library is there.

So there's a lot of Truman history there.

And it's not too far from Independence, which is where you're going to find the Harry S. Truman National Historic Site.

So in order to get tickets, you do have to go directly to the park to get same day first come first serve tickets.
