In the Heights

You know, I once interviewed Kiara Alegria-Hudes, who won the Pulitzer.

I think most people know best for her work on In the Heights.

And she said to me that her work is about cultural records equality, that if you tell your story and I tell my story, then there is no way to deny our existence.

And I think those are the stakes of the fight that we find ourselves in.

And then we will also have cabarets, bilingual cabarets, and really exciting conversations.

Uh, in October we have one with Lin-Manuel Miranda and Quiara Alegría Hudes, um, who wrote In the Heights.

So, like, what is that process of creation? So a lot of more exciting things to come, things that come directly from community about creation around development and action.

What can we do? Because we're very local community rooted, because we know that creating change at a local level really has ripple effects across the country.

That was one that, oh gosh, every time that it came to the Broward Center, the Adrian Arsht Center for the tours in Florida, me and my family would always go.

Um, I loved In the Heights-

So I would wanna be Benny in In the Heights-

... or, or George Washington, [laughs] in all honesty.

Her name's Danielle Worrell.

She won for In the Heights, and she's an amazing woman, phenomenal woman.

And in the middle of tech, she just said to me, you know you don't want to do this, right? And I was glad.

I was shook.

So that's been a big learning lesson doing the work now that I do with the men's group.

But, um, To keep this first answer short, after I did my second Broadway show, which was In the Heights, I did leave the industry and I worked at a primitive skills school for six months in the woods with one of the top leading trainers.

It was called the Tracker School.

And I also took a lot of classes.

And that's how I kind of got into musicals at all.

Like the first one was, I mean, I guess Rent, but really Hamilton.

But then he introduced me to In the Heights, which was his favorite because he's a Mexican man.

And he just absolutely...

... uh, is a fabulous musical that everyone should watch and listen to the soundtrack.

I think they were both launched around the same time.

We would have like choked people out to get those free tickets.
