You describe the way the then INS, you're kind of trying to get a handle on this.
Matthew SitmanHOST
59:26
They start categorizing people by nationality, right? And you say, like, that was tricky when it came to Palestinians because the United States government didn't recognize a Palestinian nation, actually.
Matthew SitmanHOST
59:38
So for the bureaucratic purposes, how does that work? But there was a quote where people were getting arrested and they had to bring their paperwork, right, to immigration services.
Rozina AliGUEST
63:46
And I want to say it was the biggest change in U.S. bureaucracy since World War II.
Rozina AliGUEST
63:53
And part of DHS was creating ICE.
Rozina AliGUEST
63:58
And one of the fundamental differences between ICE and its predecessor, which was INS, Immigration and Naturalization Services, was that ICE was not just a bureaucratic processing agency.
Rozina AliGUEST
64:13
It was also an enforcement agency, right? It was combining enforcement at the borders and also enforcement in the homeland.
Ryan GrimGUEST
37:11
Right.
Sam SederHOST
37:11
Prior to 9/11, INS was under the auspices of the Department of Justice.
Sam SederHOST
37:16

This is what it says, 'cause people are like, "Oh, are you just gonna deny illegal?" Yeah.
Mike SlaterHOST
14:01
It said, "People shall not receive any healthcare services from a publicly funded healthcare facility until verified as a US citizen or as a lawfully admitted alien." [coughs] "Illegal aliens cannot go to public school." Uh, it said, "All law enforcement agents who suspect that a person who's been arrested is in violation of immigration laws must investigate the detainee's immigration status, and if they find evidence of illegality, they must report it to the Attorney General of California and the Federal Immigration Naturalization Services, INS.
Mike SlaterHOST
14:29
They must also notify the detainee of his or her apparent status as an alien." So every law enforcement in the state had to become ICE, basically.
Mike SlaterHOST
14:37

Charles ColemanGUEST
15:42
You're talking about the Department of Immigration and Naturalization Services, INS.
Charles ColemanGUEST
15:50
You could easily get this paperwork from INS because it's filed with INS.
Charles ColemanGUEST
15:55
So let's be very clear about this, right? So if either A, you somehow could not obtain that paperwork from INS, the government agency responsible for processing these requests, and they didn't have it, why do you think some years later that Ilhan Omar is going to have it? number not number b if you will uh the paperwork itself is very unlikely to show the type of discrepancy 20 years later that you think is going to be your smoking gun to use in court somehow invalidate her citizenship and then indirectly invalidate uh her candidacy or her her place as a u.s representative so i i don't see this as much more than a harassment uh uh technique and i am curious as to how the government intends to maintain a good faith base basis for such a broad search uh if they are called to the carpet on it which is why i suspect in part they were re reigned in by the federal judge who said you can't go that far
Don LemonHOST

Roger ParloffPANELIST
84:59
And what often, very often happens when people are falsely ar- ar- arrested, the, the, the INS s- a- according to the judge, there are countless instances where the I- where ICE says, uh, it, it, it jailed people because of a misidentification.
Roger ParloffPANELIST

Brian MackeyHOST
