Illiam Dhone

Lord Derby was captured at the Battle of Worcester and the victorious Commonwealth sentenced him to death, but he offered to surrender the Isle of Man in return for his life.

The problem was that the Countess was no longer in a position to comply because a Northern Royalist, Sir Philip Musgrave, had taken over as governor and he was assisted by a Manx leader, William Christian, who was known locally as Iliam Dunn.

So this pair held out for better surrender terms and while they did, Lord Derby was beheaded in October 1651.

Now Derby hadn't been popular because he'd suppressed and exploited the Manxed Islands.
