Illawarra Steelers

The whole of Newcastle.

It was like when there was the Illawarra Steelers.

Wollongong was exactly the same.

Melbourne's the same.

I remember one particular moment.

I think he was playing for the Illawarra Steelers down in Wollongong, so right at the very start of his career.

And there was a scrum on the halfway line on this side of the field, and the opposition won the ball, and Craig Fitzgibbon made a try-saving tackle at the corner post at the other side of the field 50 meters away, or odd meters away.

And that I've, I've never forgotten.

They wanted to crucify me because I was the only bloke who put my hand up and said I signed.

And then ended up having a year at Illawarra Steelers where, yeah, 96.

And I played a fair bit of first grade there that year.

And then the Super League war hit and everyone was heading everywhere and I ended up at London Broncos.
