If I Had You

The later Carpenters records had already suffered commercially because he believed they lacked that kind of obvious single, and he did not hear one on Karen's album either.

There was one possible exception, If I Had You.

Ironically, that was one of the most adventurous recordings on the album.

Arranger Bob James had deliberately tried to push Karen outside the familiar carpenter's mold, while Rod Temperton helped construct its intricate call-and-response vocal ending.

In 1989, he assembled a Carpenter's album called Love Lines.

Four tracks from Karen's rejected solo project appeared on it.

If I Had You, Remember When Lovin' Took All Night, If We Try, and Love Lines.

Richard did not simply release every track exactly as Karen had left it.
