Okay, Gryla.

She is explicitly associated with an object called a Grylukerti, an icicle candle.

An icicle candle? That sounds exactly like the Hildageisalam, the battle icicle from our poem.

The linguistic parallel is undeniable.

But why organize it at all? Why not let the horror stand on its own?

Because the poet is trying to communicate something profound to a new Christian audience.

He takes the Grylukerti, the monster's icicle candle, and transfigures it.

He takes the blacksmith's image of plunging hot iron into a quenching trough, and he elevates it to plunging a Paschal candle into a baptismal font.

It consists of mainly packed ice and calcite.

Icicles generate hanging from the ceiling.

Large icicle structures made of packed ice generate on the ground and hanging from the ceiling.

Patches of snow occasionally generate on the ground.
