Ichi the Killer

I, I believe the director's in, um...

I've not seen this film, but he's in, have you heard of Ichi The Killer? Oh.

Yes.

He's in that.

Ichi The Killer is one of my favorite horror films.

I need to watch Ichi The Killer.

So good.

Yeah, and he was, uh- But yeah, I think my, the first line of my review for this film summed up the whole experience for me.

So it-

And Ichi the Killer.

Yeah.

And also did, um, As the Gods Will, I think it's called, which, uh, Squid Game's totally ripped off, but... [laughs]

Ooh.

Yeah.

Audition and Ichi the Killer.

I really wanna watch MPD Psycho.

So my first time watching this movie, my wife used to work at a video rental store in Minneapolis called Cinema Revolution.

Only thing they carried in there was things like Criterion Collection, really good foreign films, Ichi the Killer, Old Boy, stuff like that.

And this popped up on there.

Yeah, I worked

It's still creepy beforehand I will stress.

I think there's a disconnect between the western marketing and reputation of this movie compared to the actual experience of watching this movie.

I also think some of it comes down to Miki's general filmography overview of hyper-violent movies.

He directed another movie called Ichi the Killer, which is just banned here still.

Oh, great.

Because it's that violent.

Yeah, it's like,

when is it gonna...

price.

Also, Takashi Miike did an homage to this at the beginning of Ichi the Killer.

There you go.

They were filling another...

I think DVD boom also helped, you know, you, you know, suddenly you could see all these like crazy Japanese V cinema movies, crazy in quotes, but you know, very extra excited kind of, oh yeah this this has like

ichi the killer like these guys definitely were in their college film classes going home and watching ichi the killer on dvd this is undoubtedly and

yeah so it has this it has this like you know kind of like transnational kind of bent to it but made by two white guys who have zero knowledge or interest in any other race and so it just becomes like you say these are the latinos They say, Cholo, these are the Asians.

These are the Japanese who are also the Asians.

I just play their video games.

And that's, like, the whole movie.

But it is funny to watch Jason Statham getting, like, this stupid caricature, like, you know, kind of, like, bent-out nose and big protruding chin fighting the guy who's basically just Tadonabo Asano from Ichi the Killer.

Like, literally, it's like they just showed the stylist a photo of him from Ichi the Killer.

Takashi Mieke did Audition and

Ichi the Killer.

Oh, oh, oh.

The guy

I mean, maybe the violence is very graphic.

And like...

There's literally a man cut vertically in half in Ichi the Killer.

Like, how are they going to pan a video game? Well, that's a

And I think my feeling here is this movie is fine, right? Like Takashi Miike knows how to make a kind of like striking, gruesome, you know, visual.

And there's a few of those here that, you know, remind me of Ichi the Killer or some of those earlier films.

But overall, I think my issue with this is, for one, the lieutenant ain't bad enough.

For my taste.
