The flavor is one thing, but yet the gameplay is important, which that, like, um, finding inspirations for that, I ... is also go- going to be important for a good cube.

Played positively synergistically with the set and didn't have really any negative synergies that could really punish you for the fact that you've got this enchantment as kind of a liability on the board.

So let's talk about the history of Oblivion Ring, which actually started all the way back in Ice Age with a not-white card.

Icy Prison was a blue-blue enchantment that said when it comes into play, remove target creature from the game.

So it's important to pay attention here to when the Oblivion Ring-like effect talks about creature or creature plus other types or permanent.

So it was very expensive over time.

It was meant to be like a temporary prison, hence the Icy, like the Ice Will Melt maybe.

but that was uh back in 1995 very early magic ice age had what you would call an oblivion ring kind of effect but oblivion ring uh proper first came as a magic online promo so not in paper in the year 2002. two and a white enchantment when oblivion ring enters the battlefield exile another target non-land permanent when oblivion ring leaves the battlefield return the exiled card to the battlefield under its owner's control two separate blocks of text originally and there were all kinds of timing shenanigans with oblivion ring because that created two triggers and so if you manage to remove oblivion ring from the battlefield yourself While the first trigger was still on the stack, then it would exile your opponent's thing, and they would have no enchantment on the board to remove, so there would be no way for them to trigger the second set of text.

That created lots of crashiness and problems on Magic Online, apparently, and then it was something that could definitely be taken advantage of in paper in the years that followed.

And one of the cards that is immediately popping out to me on this deck list is Martin Stromgald from Ice Age.
