Ian Dury

Uh, the song was written in 1974.

He didn't record it for three years, and, uh, that produced by Nick Lowe and Ian Dury, couple of Stiff label mates, and, uh, featured Reckless Eric doing the guitar and vocals, Nick Lowe on bass, and Steve Goulding on the drums.

I mean, what an act both of those people had.

So fortunate that I saw both of those guys on multiple occasions.

Well,

look, I lived my, because, you know, I came out of this thing with Ian Dury, Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe, and they went on to huge success.

And, you know, I kind of I actually didn't like it all.

I don't know if I could.

And I think the first record that I did it on, and probably the only record I did it on for about 20 years, was called Semaphore Signals.

And it was the B-side of my first single, Whole Wide World.

And it has these three instrumental passages, which... we recorded it in a four-track studio and in the we had to record the drums the bass and the guitar and it was ian dury playing the drums and he really hardly ever played anything but the the hi-hat on the bass drum so yeah you know right and and um And then the bass player was his girlfriend, who was a woman called Denise Rudette, who came from Trinidad.

And she was just the coolest woman I had ever met, you know.

And I don't know why we associate drugs with rock and roll.

Maybe it's because of Ian Dury's song.

And there's going to be one from Haircut 100, Adam and the Ants, and Squeeze.

From 1981, that was The Cynics with American Economics or Rock Apocalypse from their only EP called Beat the Cynics.

The Cynics were inspired by Buzzcocks, The Clash, and Ian Dury.

These Christian New Wavers did not want to sound like stereotypical Christian music, and they definitely do not.

Anyway, he's from Bredbury.

Oh, right.

And then a couple of the Brinsley's, including Brinsley Shorts himself, was in Graham Parker's band, The Rumor, also produced by Nick Lowe.

And then you start getting into bands like The Records and The Motors and Ian Dury and The Blockheads, and you find out that there's this whole twisted web thing.

that includes, you know, all these great pub rock bands like Ducks Deluxe and Curse of Flyers and Kilburn and the High Roads.

And yeah, I think it's interesting for anybody that's interested in like punk and new wave to kind of see all these different interconnections.

And there are key guys along the way.

And it was a very, when I say guys, it was a very male dominated scene.

Ian Dury, I'll never forget seeing Ian Dury for the first time on TV because you just don't forget seeing somebody like that.

And, you know, it was reinforced when I, you know, I was a child when I saw Ian Dury for the first time on TV.

It was because of the Brimsey Schwartz band who he'd managed to split up.

I think he helped Ian Drury out.

He tried with him, Kilburn and the High Roads, who under Stiff Records became the Blockheads.

Yeah, so none of those bands were doing anything.

They could sort of split up.
