I Won't Back Down

Here we go.

This artist had to award Tom Petty 12.5% songwriting credit for stealing the melody of I Won't Back Down in the 20...

Go ahead.

Sam Smith.

I couldn't remember what artist, but I knew the story.

I just literally was thinking about this the other week because I guess he got interviewed recently because that happened like 10 years ago.

And he swears still in 2026 that he's never heard the song I Won't Back Down before, which I feel like is physically impossible that you've never heard the song I Won't Back Down by Tom Petty.

I also go like, man...

It's like a, I don't want to give up an inch.

I won't back down kind of card.

And, you know, sometimes it can be seen as, you know, like being backed into a corner and trying to fight your way out.

But I think that's what's already been going on.

And if they're against you, oh well.

Stick with those who are with you and stand your ground.

So if you are familiar with the classic, I won't back down.

Might want to be humming a few bars today as you look to further your position in a particular area of life.

It didn't feel like a tradition.

You know, it didn't feel like you're in Gainesville, Florida, and everybody's singing I Won't Back Down before the fourth quarter, and everybody knows it's coming, and everybody's into it.

It was not that.

He's like, oh, here's a song.

Uh, I actually left at the half, or not the half, I'm sorry, at the end of the third quarter to get home because I wanted to watch the, uh, Ohio State-Texas game.

But the thing that was interesting about that was the, the place was still packed, and then they did I Won't Back Down, and then it was, it was like a storm of people coming out of that place, and it was fun.

Though it was like we were leaving after a game, but the game wasn't over.

Uh, there were lines for, to go on, get on the buses to go to the different malls and everything, including coming out here to Creekside.

Yeah, there and like everyone grouped that.

But the greatest moment there is Tom Petty doing I Won't Back Down.

So it's like September maybe 16th, 17th.

It's not long afterwards.

And that has become quite a tradition for them.

And then Florida does I Won't Back Down by Tom Petty.

And so you're right.

It's an incredible scene.

No, not '90, '97.

2017 when I was coaching the Magpies and we had that good year, our song at, in the final warmup, Tom Petty, I Won't Back Down, Kimbo.

Oh, yeah.

And the boys [laughs] used to love it.

downSo that was a good one.

We've currently got one at Goody Saints now.
