But Huey Lewis offered this explanation in an interview.

He said, "The whole meaning of I Want a New Drug is that drugs aren't a part of life.

They're just superficial.

They're nothing about life.

It was the lead single from their humongous breakthrough album, Sports, and it propelled the band into the mainstream with superstardom.

It was Heart and Soul, and I think after that, it was I Want a New Drug, and then because of the timing of Back to the Future, Power of Love kicked in, and that was the era of Huey Lewis and the News.

It actually hit number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart.

And before you go blaming it for not hitting number one, there was that guy with the white glove who pretty much dominated at that point.

..."I Want a New Drug" gets, bumps Billy Jean off the charts.

The story goes that was made for 1984's Ghostbusters, of course.

Ray would run into some legal issues when the courts decided the song was a touch too similar to Huey Lewis's I Want a New Drug, which it is an absolute juggernaut of a track, though.

He was supposedly given just days to write the song, and he came up with Who You Gonna Call after hearing it on a local business's TV ad.

I think it was like an exterminator or something, who are you going to call? That obviously became the film's catch-cry endures to this day.

News, that's right.

"I Want a New Drug." This one was, uh, 1983.

When we all used to get our news from the nine o'clock news or the ten o'clock news.

Ah.

... she thought Huey Lewis' I Want a New Drug was I want a new truck.

[laughs] That's fantastic.
