I Wanna Hold Your Hand

Spielberg was so taken by the movie that he assisted Zemeckis and Gale in securing a development deal for an original screenplay.

Bilbert then directed 1941, which Pair wrote, and also produced Zemeckis' first two directorial attempts, 1978's I Wanna Hold Your Hand and 1980's Used Cars.

Both were flops, but Zemeckis and Gale had an idea for a time travel comedy, and in 1980 they wrote the first draft of Back to the Future.

In this draft, Marty McFly traveled back in time to the 11th of March 1952 rather than 1955 and the current year was 1982.

It was like Zemeckis and Gale couldn't win.

Zemeckis, though, had a breakthrough.

Despite both I Wanna Hold Your Hand and Used Cars being flops, 20th Century Fox, who had taken over Romancing the Stone from Columbia, noticed Zemeckis had a talent for directing, as did producer-star Michael Douglas.

He wanted the energy of Used Cars to be in Romancing the Stone, and personally selected Zemeckis as the director.

So now we needed something to bounce back from.

Do you remember a very low budget movie that I saw on TV like the year later? So it's a 78 movie, and it's about a bunch of kids that try to see the Beatles live at Ed Sullivan Theater in the 60s called I Want to Hold Your Hand.

I vaguely remember something about that.
