See, the word you're probably looking for is hyperfixation, an unusually intense sustained preoccupation with an interest.

Hyperfocus describes the state you enter while doing it.

Hours disappear, switching tasks is difficult, and you ignore hunger, sleep, or other responsibilities.

There isn't a solid male versus female prevalence figure for hyperfixation itself because researchers don't treat it as a standardized diagnosis.

I'm checking the closest evidence.

The brain may struggle to direct, sustain, disengage, or shift attention according to importance, rather than interest, urgency, or immediate reward.

Hyperfocus is discussed widely in ADHD research and lived experience, although researchers are still refining how it should be measured.

So, autism can also involve highly focused attention and interests, like intense interests.

We call these hyperfixation sometimes or special interests.

What we talked about last week is one of the most significant relationship stressors for adults with ADHD.

In the early stages of a relationship, the novelty activates the ADHD brain completely.

Hyperfocus is, like, a very well-known [laughs] element of ADHD where you just sort of block out everything.
