Hyde Park

Some local restaurants in Hyde Park, including Bern's Steak House, are suing the city of Tampa over their massive stormwater project because they aren't on board with those plans.

Plan is to install large box culverts under South Howard Avenue to carry water out of the streets and into Tampa Bay.

And the project is a solution to flooding in an area that does get flooded very easily.

And we went to dinner in Tampa.

If you've ever been to Hyde Park in Tampa, it is absolutely precious.

It is like straight out of a picture, like a picture book.

It's just these adorable shops.

I mean, Tampa Theatre is also celebrating 100 years this year.

And so for Davis to be able to, to dredge that, the, those little mud flats that were out there to create land just, you know, adjacent to Hyde Park and right up across, you know, a bridge, you know, of course there was no bridge, but right across the channel from, from downtown, you know, that was a, a real crowning achievement.

And because, you know, Florida was still seen as an exotic location, the island was part of the attraction.

You know, you're in an island in Florida.

And, you know, ironically or, or, you know, I don't...

You could almost [laughs] use another word perhaps, another adjective, uh, the islands were created just a few years after the 1921 hurricane, which, uh, put the little, uh, mud flats that were there totally underwater, uh, flooded downtown Tampa.

You, of course, had Hyde Park, Palmetto Beach.

Um, there was, there wa- you know, it's the last time a hurricane had hit here until the 2024 storms.

And I don't think we looked at that either, right? Like you wonder why people, like, so when I go down, because I live in the greater Tampa area, right? So when you go down to a place called Hyde Park, so Hyde Park is right there by Bayshore.

Bayshore is like a million dollar home.

It's right by Davis Island.

Exact opposite here

in the Tampa area.

I go to Hyde Park on a weekday, right, just to get lunch when I was active duty.

And it'd be like 2 p.m., you know, and it'd just be packed, full of people.
