Now here's our first story from the September 11th edition of the Business Record.

Jeremy Gosch is in his fourth year as Hy-Vee's CEO and is steering the large Midwest regional grocery chain through a competitive landscape unlike any faced by his predecessors.

The four Hy-Vee CEOs who preceded Gosch helped transform a small Iowa grocery chain into a regional retailer with more than $14 billion in annual sales.

Along the way, they confronted formidable competitors in the likes of warehouse clubs, super centers, and discount grocers.

The 51-year-old gosh, though, faces a more pervasive challenge, one that extends beyond the traditional selling of perishable and non-perishable foods.

Grocery stores themselves are being disrupted as consumers increasingly decide not only where to buy food, but how they want to get it and whether they want to prepare it themselves.

Gosch told the Business Record during his first one-on-one interview with an Iowa media outlet that anybody that sells food, that's who we're competing with.

Gosch's response to disruption in the grocery industry is to refocus Hy-Vee on what he considers its core while investing in areas that will offer the West Des Moines-based employee-owned grocer the best opportunities for growth, food, and health care.

In

And my dad knows this man.

Every product you purchased, he was making a comment about it.

The stage is Superman.

But for Brian, it was like the cape was the Hy-Vee's vest.

The dump truck wasn't the disguise.

It was where he found his actual piece.
