Human Torch

Yeah,

you know, there was the original Human Torch, which they, you know, Roy ultimately brought into the current mythos and turned him into the Vision.

And, of course, Sub-Mariner, we find out now, is immortal.

And he was living, you know, in the Bowery with a big beard, you know.

But as far as these AI Avengers, well, they are going to be a cosmic crucible team.

And it's going to be based on the new members, Joe Costa, Human Torch Jim.

And I looked this guy up.

He's actually older than Johnny Storm.

This is one of the first Marvel characters.

Before they were even called Marvel, Timely Comics was what they were called.

Those are the first three characters.

So this is actually a very, very old character that's being reintroduced.

Yes, we have returned to the Marvel Universe this week and we'll be there next week too.

Now, listeners, you may remember the last time we read an issue of Freedom Fighters, it ended... with a cliffhanger, with District Attorney David Pearson being addressed by a bunch of superhero-type characters that were clearly based on the stars of the Marvel series, the Invaders, i.e. the American Commando was based on Captain America and Fireball was based on the Human Torch etc etc and this this is all part of a sort of another unofficial crossover between DC Comics and Marvel Comics in the 70s where the Marvel series The Invaders featured some characters who were based on the Freedom Fighters and The Freedom Fighters featured some characters who were based on The Invaders and what The Invaders and The Freedom Fighters both have in common of course is that they're retcon superhero teams put together of superheroes that were published during World War II isn't that right Peter?

Well, certainly is, David.

Mm-hmm.

And I remember the realization that this was the same Captain America.

It was the same Submariner, but it was a different Human Torch.

Sure.

Chaos in Canada.

So Canada was created by Carl Burgos, who also created the original Human Torch.

And it first appeared in Marvel Mystery Comics, January 1940.

And this is true.

suit? It's a version.

Golden Age Human Torch, and the Vision is in that batch.

So I'm not sure why, you know, they decided to do this particular character in this particular way, but they wanted to have a new character and thought maybe it'd be an android.

And so they repurposed that Vision as this Vision, basically.

So, um.

We should say, speaking of Vision's origins, it's like, I was wondering when doing this episode, it's like, it's like, so, so when did he find out that his body was the Human Torch's android body? Um, which is canonically part of the thing, and we did the, um, the Human Torch's origin a couple of months ago-

um it reminds me mando v movies had a great video where he just did 100 pitches to kevin feige and one of them was a show that was or what if they were what if pitches sorry and one of them is what if the hex kept expanding and covered the whole earth and i was like how the hell do we get the watchers hitting each other before we got that that is a great idea i would have loved to have seen Feature films this website that sparked this whole conversation also mentioned jim hammond being in one episode of the show Hammond is okay.

It's long story short.

He's the original human torch the android uh marvel comics number one you know his first appearance and he also had like a little cameo in the stark expo wasn't the stark expo in the future expo in um and captain america first avenger and Basically, they redid this, but originally Ultron kidnapped his creator, Phineas Horton, and said, give me a body to put my son into.

Comics are weird.

But I love the idea of Terry pulling from that lore and going, hey, we have that weird android cameo.

Is that guy alive? Did he fight in World War II? Did Captain America, did we ever get that? How much of a thing do you think this android Jim Hammond is going to be?

I think an episode, right? Like I think it totally makes sense not to keep harping on the same word that I just said, but as a reclamation of like leftover things, that's something that hasn't exactly been dangling, but it's an Easter egg that was thrown out in one of the first MCU movies.

So he built the Vision.

So to do this, the Vision was actually a stolen body of the Human Torch.

No, no, no, not that Human Torch.

The other Human Torch.

Wait, there's more than one Human Torch? Yes.

So not Johnny Storm of the Fantastic Four, but the OG Human Torch, Jim Hammond.

Now, he was back in the 40s with Namor and Captain America part of, I think it was the Invaders, right? He was the original Human Torch, but he was an android.

He was not a human being.
