In 1946, a communist-led uprising began among the peasant population in central Luzon in the Philippines.

The rebels, known as the Huks, had started out as a resistance force against the former Japanese occupation.

After independence, they were outlawed and repressed and by 1950 their insurgency had pushed the Philippine government to the brink of collapse.

The US, not wanting the Philippines to be another domino falling to the communists, responded by sending military advisers, weapons and money.
