They shared this with other avant-gardes, uh, in Europe, uh, prior to World War I, a generational revolt against what they saw as the staleness and corruption and sterility of European culture in the late 19th century, in the fin de siècle, at the turn of the 20th century.

The other avant-gardes include Dada in Switzerland at the Cabaret Voltaire, a movement founded by Hugo Ball, who wore a paper suit and looked like a human rocket.

Dada was anti-war, anti-bourgeois, while futurism was grooming a far-right political movement, and the Italian futurists were pushing back against a world they thought had gone fat and stale.

Their aesthetic to counter this staleness was built around speed, aggression, machines, conflict.
