Hugh Nibley

Isaiah is for our time.

This is a big theme with Hugh Nibley.

And of course, he's not the only one who has said this and emphasized it.

One of his students is Avram Giliadi, who has written books about Isaiah.

and worked very closely with Hugh Nibley on this topic at the Y.

And the big message is, this is for now.

Nibley puts it very well.

They shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.

I'm a mom of a bunch of kids and a PTA volunteer.

I'm not Hugh Nibley.

I'm not, you know, Dave Butler.

I'm not any of these people.

Actually, I hope by the end of every week, you'll have some passages that you love, that you resonate with and want to remember or reread or write down and review.

Nibley has said, Hugh Nibley, who of course talks a lot about Isaiah.

Why? Partly because Nibley is fixated on Zion to our benefit.

And Isaiah is talking about Zion.

And so I think that's interesting.

And then you look at Salt Lake, and if people have never seen this before, but Hugh Nibley showed that Salt Lake and Utah Valley, or Salt Lake Valley and Utah Valley are basically an inverse of Jerusalem.

Oh, yeah,

yeah, yeah.

It started in high school for him from a devoted seminary teacher who taught him.

And then from BYU professors, you may have heard of Hugh Nibley and Robert K. Thomas.

Jack is also known as the one who discovered chiasmus in the Book of Mormon while serving as a young missionary in South Germany in 1967, which is so cool.

And there's so much backstory there that We're going to resist the temptation to go into that black hole today, but there is so much there.

And additionally, the Prophet Joseph Smith said, quote, I will show from the Hebrew Bible that I am correct, and the first word shows a plurality of gods.

Additionally, Hugh Nibley, as a side note, also denotes that there is a plurality of God in this first sentence of the Hebrew Bible.

Additionally, divinely revealed doctrine reflects both a masculine and feminine component to God.

All human beings, male and female, are created in the image of God.

Those are just punibly theoretical people, I think.

And of course, the pre-Adamites are created by Hugh Nibley.

I thought it was great when they found out about him because they thought, oh my gosh, now I don't have to worry about evolution anymore.

Well, of course, that's why they were created.

Nobody else uses these images, huh? I also think he's referring to the ancient roots of the word atone.

I love Hugh Nibley's definition of someone's fleeing in the wilderness from their enemies and they come upon a tent in the wilderness and the sheik stands at the doorway and as he pleads for safety and the sheik will embrace him at the doorway of their tabernacle or their tent.

And as he lets him into their tent, then he can be safe and fed and cared for.

It's a beautiful image of a veil letting someone into heaven.
