Hugh MacDiarmid

I was maybe over-egging it a bit.

[laughs] I was just thinking about what the great 20th century poet Hugh MacDiarmid argued when he said that true Scottish identity isn't found in, like, fancy castles or high society art.

It's found in the gritty daily lives of ordinary people.

So basically, if we project that onto the Scottish morning roll, we could say that to MacDiarmid, a crispy roll is just as culturally significant as a sonnet.
