We will bring forward legislation soon but we can find a solution to end this injustice which balances public safety and basic fairness and I urge colleagues on all sides of the house to help us do that.

Let's talk about this further with Andrew Morris, who's a board member of the Howard League for Penal Reform, who was given an imprisonment for public protection sentence in 2007 for offences which usually lead to a two year jail term, but ended up spending 12 and a half years in prison.

Well, Andrew, I imagine you have some fairly strong views on this.

Do you think the prime minister is heading in the right direction or are you concerned about some of his statements?

Because, I mean, I found it incredible when I saw that you were sentenced for a crime which normally led to a two and a half year jail sentence, but you ended up in prison for 12 and a half years.

Now, that must have led you, led...

i mean if it were me i would really resent that i would and after i came out of prison i might not then have reintegrated as a normal member of society now given that you're now on the board of the howard league you clearly have but was that a difficult transition

um i mean i don't know if it was a difficult transition i was quite fortunate that life was not too bad before it went off the rails and i I developed alcoholism and drug addiction and I'm quite grateful that I'm nearly 20 years clean and sober these days.
