Howard Hendricks

The third ambush is the ambush of a neglected family.

Dr. Howard Hendricks did a survey of 246 men who were in ministry, significant ministries, serving the Lord, different gifts, solid guys.

He said, all of these guys were solid theologically.

There was no doctrinal deviation here.

When I went to Dallas Seminary, Dr. Howard Hendricks was my favorite professor.

I remember one time he gave us an assignment.

He was teaching us Bible study methods.

To cut a clear path.

I've had the opportunity, uh, through the years to mentor some young pastors, and one of the things I always tell them is a line that I got from Howard Hendricks years ago, when he said, "Our job is not to teach the Bible, it's to teach people the Bible." Our job is not to teach the Bible, it's to teach people the Bible.

That changes your approach.

Because when you sincerely love people, all people, and you want God's best for them, you just wanna cut a clear path.

So my father-in-law, who's since passed away, was best friends with that pastor in seminary.

And they used to travel the country and do Howard Hendricks inductive Bible study methods.

Okay.

Praise God for that.

We're called to make disciples, not just decisions, 'cause Jesus says, "Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations." Um, I wanna maybe ask you a question today.

Who has God placed in your life today that you can intentionally encourage and disciple? Who has God put in your life? Maybe the, the thought this morning as you're listening to this podcast is just to ask the Lord to open up your ears and your, your eyes, um, to see and to hear what's going on, and so you can actually, um, put a pin down on that person or that name or that family or that, that coworker that you just know, "Okay, God, you put that person in my life so that I can share faith, so that I can encourage, so I can disciple." Um, Howard Hendricks said this: "Christianity is always one generation away from extinction unless disciples make disciples." Christianity is always one generation away from extinction unless disciples make disciples.

We love seeing people make a decision to follow Christ in our services at our church.

But to, to, to make that even greater is when we see people go on and become disciples of Jesus.

Same house, but not the same people.

Dr. Howard Hendricks was a longtime professor at Dallas Theological Seminary.

He possessed both depth and warmth when he spoke or lectured.

I was recently reading his book, Color Outside the Lines.

He had been thinking about it.

Howard Hendricks once said, nothing's more profitable than serious thinking and nothing is more demanding.

If you're going to be a leader in this world, you need time to think.

You need think time.
