Uncle PatchesHOST
7:34
Frankenstein meets the Wolfman in 1943, where he played the Wolfman again.
Uncle PatchesHOST
7:41
House of Frankenstein, where he played the Wolfman again.
Uncle PatchesHOST
7:45
Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstein, where he once again played the Wolfman, and that was in 1948.
Uncle PatchesHOST
7:52
So he wound up playing the Wolfman quite a bit back in the day.
Michael HuieHOST
12:32
And so the one I decided to pick sort of ties in with my second one in a couple of different ways.
Michael HuieHOST
12:37
And it's really – I guess the first major universal monster mashup, and it's House of Frankenstein from 1944.
speaker_7SOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
12:46
I'm going to give that brain of yours a new home in the skull of the Frankenstein monster.

The jugular vein is severed,
Michael HuieHOST
17:51
For sure.
Michael HuieHOST
17:51
All right.
Michael HuieHOST
17:52
So that's my black and white pick, House of Frankenstein.
Michael HuieHOST
17:55
Now we're moving on to color.
Jimmy McShaneHOST
38:53
Yeah, I don't remember how many it was, but it was plentiful.
Ryan RitterHOST
39:00
J. Carol Nash, who was also previously reviewed in this space when we did House of Frankenstein.
Ryan RitterHOST
39:07
He appears here as the inspector.
Ryan RitterHOST
39:10
Very noble character indeed, at least to my recollection, unless I'm remembering wrong.
JohnHOST
15:27
And Michael Mark, who's using his native Russian accent rather than attempting anything even vaguely Germanic, was best known to me personally for his role as Dr. Zinthrop in the 1959 movie The Wasp Woman, which was featured on MST3K's successor project Cinematic Titanic, and which I've seen a number of times.
JohnHOST
15:47
He actually had a lot of those kind of genre parts, though, in everything from Son of Frankenstein to The Mummy's Hand to House of Frankenstein.
JohnHOST
15:54
The series jumps ahead a generation between Bride and Son, which is one reason why nobody's playing the same characters, all the way up through Return of the Fly and Attack of the Puppet People.
JohnHOST
16:04
His last role was in 1969, and he passed away in 1975 at the age of 88.

JohnHOST
34:32
The monster storms out into the night, his immediate fate unknown.
JohnHOST
34:36
Back at the Frankenstein estate, Henry is determined to lose himself in romance with his wife, and while I don't think this is meant to be a major theme of the film, you can definitely read Mad Science as an allegory for homosexuality and Henry's determination to cure his obsession through heteronormativity, a symbolic parallel to many real-life gay men of the era who tried to dive headlong into marriage to avoid confronting the truth about their orientation.
JohnHOST
35:00
It will absolutely be a major theme of the next movie, but we'll get to that when Bride of Frankenstein shows up on the schedule elizabeth asks if they can make the wedding soon which is delivered so ostentatiously i've heard people suggest he may have already gotten her pregnant even though i don't know when that would have happened and the two of them kiss also he's got a lit cigarette in his hand this whole time and it's just so bizarre to see him convalesce and return to health with the aid of some smooth tobacco We jump ahead to the wedding day, where the Baron Frankenstein is glowing with pride at the resumption of his family's traditions and toasting the health to a son of the House of Frankenstein, and a jolly good health to young Frankenstein, so we've got the titles of three upcoming movies right then and there.
JohnHOST
35:43
Henry himself seems a little bit anxious at the mention of producing a son and heir, which may be a reference to Elizabeth's pre-existing pregnancy or to a case of nerves at having to perform with a woman, depending on how heteronormative you want to be with this subtext, and out in the streets we get diegetic music and dancing as the townsfolk celebrate the impending nuptials.
Billy Bob ThompsonGUEST
44:03
Dude, it's great.
Billy Bob ThompsonGUEST
44:04
I'm gonna show a bunch of cartoons, and then House of Frankenstein from 1944.
Luke FieldHOST
44:08
Oh, that's right.
Luke FieldHOST
44:08
You were just telling me about this.
Billy Bob ThompsonGUEST
44:15
... show you the print that I have.
Billy Bob ThompsonGUEST
44:16
It's just so much fun.
Luke FieldHOST
44:17
House of Frankenstein on 16 millimeter-
Billy Bob ThompsonGUEST
44:19
It's-
L.W. MarshallHOST
57:51
Now, just stick a stake in their heart, and they can't get up.
L.W. MarshallHOST
57:54
Think of the movie House of Frankenstein, one of my favorites.
L.W. MarshallHOST
57:58
Dracula's in that for a brief time, and the mad scientist, played by Boris Karloff, takes the stake out of his heart, and he becomes not a skeleton, but a full-fledged vampire.
L.W. MarshallHOST
58:09
Well, that stake wouldn't have done any good.
Obie KnoxHOST
15:13
That also explains why Lon Chaney Jr. became so inseparable from Larry Talbot.
Obie KnoxHOST
15:18
And in fact, he would return to the role in Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man, House of Frankenstein, House of Dracula, and finally, Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein.
Obie KnoxHOST
15:29
And if you're listening to these episodes as they come out, you already know where we're eventually headed.
Obie KnoxHOST
15:34
Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein is waiting for us at the end of this Universal Monster run.
GerryHOST
23:36
It's a [laughs] little sketchy, like a, a scammy promoter impresario.
GerryHOST
23:41
And between Professor Marvel and Professor Lampini from House of Frankenstein, I, I j- I just like this idea of this kind of impresario, and that's more [laughs] what I was going for.
GerryHOST
23:53
So this movie really, The Wizard of Oz, is really important to me and important to my kind of progression as a movie lover and a podcaster and all that stuff.
GerryHOST
24:04
How about you, Chris? What are some of your favorite movie moments?
speaker_14UNKNOWN
70:59
It'll do you good.
speaker_14UNKNOWN
71:01
House of Frankenstein.
speaker_14UNKNOWN
71:02
The House of Frankenstein.

Now then, now be off about your business.

Adam RocheHOST
390:05
The first of these had been the climax, the kind of sequel come remake of The Phantom of the Opera.
Adam RocheHOST
390:11
The second was far more interesting for all sorts of reasons.
Adam RocheHOST
390:17
Originally entitled Chamber of Horrors, House of Frankenstein was Universal throwing everything at the wall.
ScarahHOST
53:17
Oh.
Joseph FotinosGUEST
53:18
So The Wolf Man, Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man, House of Frankenstein, House of Dracula, Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein.
Joseph FotinosGUEST
53:25
Phew.
Joseph FotinosGUEST
53:26
That was the cinematic career of Laurence Talbot.
