House Beautiful

He said, why don't you do your research project on Ethel Power? Her name's Ethel Brownpower.

She was the editor of House Beautiful between 1923 and 1933, and she was Eleanor Raymond's life partner.

Ethel Power went to the Cambridge School as well.

She never actually practiced architecture, but she became the editor of House Beautiful magazine when it was owned by the Atlantic Monthly and the headquarters were here in Boston.

As the editor, she made the magazine a serious magazine about architecture, domestic architecture, and featured many of Eleanor Raymond's projects, and other women architects from the Cambridge School.

Well, we've all heard of

She does a Georgian revival, perfectly fitting the neighborhood facade, behind which she's created multi-family, multi-household living spaces for these different groups of women, and in many ways was entirely modern, at least unconventional, but looking to... modern ways of living.

These women were all involved in architecture.

There were books and magazines scattered all among the pillows.

She has done both local and national show houses, and built a team that helps make it all happen.

Her work has been featured in Architectural Digest, House Beautiful, Domino, Luxe, and the Chicago Tribune.

She has a studio and showroom in East Lakeview, a second design annex in the North Shore, a wallpaper collection with Isidore Leroy, and a debut book slated for fall 2027.

Today, we are getting into the real cost of a show house, the brand partnerships that make them financially viable, what local versus national show houses actually produce for a studio, and what every designer should be thinking about before they say yes to the next one.

And I was lucky enough, um...

So, up here there's, um, a well-known regional show house that's called the Lake Forest Show House, um, and I've done that twice.

And then I was asked to do House Beautiful's Whole Home, and got extremely lucky because it just happened to be in my backyard at the time, so that was in Hinsdale, Illinois.

But often designers are doing that out of state.

And yeah, it wasn't beautiful.

It wasn't House Beautiful.

It wasn't HGTV.

But it was a good home, good bones, in a good location.

... forever.

[laughs] But House Beautiful came up with a list, and they said, you know, there are some other essential things.

Not necessarily paperwork, just essential things that you really, according to professional organizers, you know... 'Cause they're usually the ones that are like, "Purge this.
