Hotel del Coronado

We're going to stay at the Waldorf Astoria in Laguna Beach as well, or at Monarch Beach technically, on free night certificates.

And we, in our annual Hotel Del Coronado, which is kind of the landmark hotel here, we stay there once or twice a year, also for free, even though it's just in town, a little staycation.

um and so i will talk through how we do that and then any other tips or tricks i've learned along the way and then uh of course gonna wrap it up with pitfall to make sure to hammer home again responsible youth so that's a little game plan for today this is gonna be a solo episode i was just texting with brian before i hit record here and asked if he wanted to hop on uh This is something that he is not interested in at all.

So believe it or not, we're not the same across all things.

You get a $400 resort credit.

And so what we do is twice a year, because I have two different home cards, we get a free night.

We go to the Hotel Del Coronado.

Super nice hotel.

I didn't even know they were tearing the Stardust down.

Got married at Hotel Del Coronado in the Casitas on the side.

They tore it down.

Within a year, they tore it down and put in tennis courts.

And when I tell you San Diego, California is the best place I've ever been in my entire life.

Put me there for two

There is effectively zero bathroom facilities built in there, and that sanitation was chamber pots again.

Okay, yeah, so this is the Hotel Coronado built in 1888, supposedly, in about a year's time, right? Because that's what we always are given with this.

and this hotel again had about what i'd say 450 rooms yeah 450 guest rooms but only about 50 bathrooms most rooms were shared facilities for a resort that was marketed at the time as one of the finest in america that ratio is quite strange even by standards of its own claimed era Idaho's territorial capital was another one I showed you a picture of that was built in the 1880s, and it had no indoor plumbing at all.

Everyone supposedly went outside to a separate outhouse.

Let me read this, and then I'll have you follow up.

You talk about David Geffen, Steven Spielberg of DreamWorks, who have contributed close to $400,000 and $236,000 to the Clintons of the Democratic Party, the Waltons of Walmart, $216,000, and Larry and Sheila Lawrence of the Hotel Del Coronado and their associated real estates, $100,000.

of contributions by their companies or their employees to the President or the Democratic Party.

You go on to say that Mr. Lawrence later achieved a brief celebrity by his triple crown of buying, lying, and dying.

Of course, there's the famous Whaley House in Old Town.

Also, the Hotel Del Coronado and the USS Midway is rumored to have ghosts, too.

But what about the stories of lesser known haunted sites in San Diego? Well, I'm joined now by someone who's made it her mission to investigate these claims.

Her name is Nicole Strickland.

In their place were two of their former employees, Canadian-born brothers from New Brunswick named James and Merritt Reed, who had bought out the firm's contracts and opened their own business.

A few years later, the Reed brothers would design one of the most famous hotels in America, the Hotel del Coronado in California.

In 1883, at 80 years old, Carpenter was on the construction site every day.

He pushed wheelbarrows.

We both campaigned for Howard Phillips, the candidate at the time, you know, after Buchanan fell off.

And I attended the 1996 National Convention at the Coronado Hotel in San Diego for the U.S. Taxpayers Party.

So this candidate, Rebecca, her last name, she was a state Republican committee woman in Wyoming.

She was a major fundraiser for President Trump.
