In the ninth year of Hoshea, the last king of Israel, the king of Assyria captured Samaria and deported the Israelites to Assyria.

He settled them in Hala in Gozan on the Habor River and in the towns of the Medes.

So the people of Israel were taken from their homeland into exile in Assyria, and they are still there, taken from the place of God.

The Israelites saw their fate approaching, realized the disastrous past to which Pekah had brought them, and decided to act before Tiglath-Pileser came.

They assassinated Pekah and elected a new king, Hoshea, who immediately offered his submission to Tiglath-Pileser, 732 B.C.

This timely action meant the preservation of part of the kingdom of Israel, but all the territory north of the plain of Jezreel and the Israelite lands in the Transjordan were detached from the kingdom and reduced to a status of Assyrian provinces.

He assassinated him and took his place as king in the twentieth year of the reign of Jotham, son of Uzziah.
