I mean, they do perform that function very well, don't get me wrong.

And since Tesla installed the 100 megawatt big battery at the Hornsdale wind farm in Australia back in 2017, utility scale lithium-ion battery installations have grown almost exponentially all over the world.

The thing is though, stationary storage is not the same as mobile storage is it? If your battery doesn't need to move anywhere, then do you really need to be bothered whether it weighs 10 tonnes or 10,000 tonnes? And what if the most important requirements are safety, longevity and the ability to charge and discharge day after day for decades, which they kind of are on a grid system designed to keep our lights on 24-7, 365.

Well, that may well be the thinking that influenced this latest project in Switzerland where a company called Flexbase is developing what could become one of the largest flow battery installations anywhere in the world.

It was the 10-year anniversary in Australia from the South Australia big statewide blackout, and that led to the world's first big battery.

What we call the Tesla big battery, which you probably like referring to it as at Hornsdale.

It's just nine years ago now.

And just the scale of the industry is just sort of shot up completely.
