Hey, um, back to that movie, um, the, uh, the, the film you were talking about earlier, Hope.

Hi, and welcome to the Filmmaker Toolkit Podcast.

I'm Chris O'Fault of IndieWire, and my guest today is director Na Hong-Jin talking about his new film, which was 10 years in the making, Hope.

Hope is a South Korean film that got a rise out of the Cannes audience like few films ever have before, and that now Neon is putting into 1,500 screens this weekend in the United States.

And I don't really know how to describe Hope.

It's kind of a monster movie, but then it becomes this sci-fi story that sets up this yet to be announced sequel.

Yet the first 40 minutes are this intense John Carpenter-esque kind of running from what you can't see before becoming this full-blown action film with performance capture CGI that doesn't look like what we're used to seeing in American blockbusters and that moves with an incredible incredible velocity that it somehow maintains over the course of its two and a half hour runtime with just incredible stunts and filmmaking.

Like we've done with previous translated interviews, the first half is going to be for the English audience, and we'll fade out of Na's Korean answers a little early and get to the English translation quicker.

And speaking of the future, I know you said you have other upcoming projects you want to tell.

There was a 10-year gap between The Wailing and Hope.

Can we... hope to see another film from you sooner than 10 years?

There are some A-list actors that eventually show up in ways that are hilarious and distracting and that is not what they were intended to be.

Clearly, there's a second film in the works based on the ending.

Hope sounds like some sort of spiritual film.

Yeah, it is an insane... science fiction movie an alien invasion film a blockbuster from south korea and it reminded me of the the nutty pleasures you know bong joon-ho the academy award-winning director of parasite and stuff like that in 2006 he did a sci-fi movie the host set in seoul where an american lab um governed by the military puts chemicals into the water and it creates a monster um you know godzilla style that terrorizes south korea's main city so i was thinking like well the koreans are okay with this stuff this one basically is about an invasion and these strange visitors are terrorizing a South Korean village.

And what happens is that the cops are brought in and the cops don't know really what to do.

I believe it's a hit in China.

I thought it was lovely.

Again, like the movie Hope from Korea, this is a subtitle thing in Chinese and Thai.
