Honoré Daumier

And a French guy.

Well, Henri Daumier before.

Henri Daumier, he was so far ahead of his time.

If you've ever seen his paintings, he was doing impressionistic work in the 1830s.

This is 40 years before Monet and Manet were doing their stuff.

Yeah, and I look back to other failures or falters of society and resistance movements and kind of, see what happened there.

And I was just looking at Daumier's Charivari, his printing in the newspaper, and I guess, King Louis, and he was just constantly needling him and, and Louis decided that he didn't like it and started living fines and, and making new laws about ridiculing the King and what was allowed and what wasn't allowed.

And Domi would always come back with something just a little bit smarter.

And he started, uh, you know, when he wasn't allowed to draw the King per se, he was drawing a pair.

Um, moves of yours inf- p- or artists I suspect have influenced you, things and people you're thinking about.

And I wanted to start with Honoré Daumier.

Mm-hmm.

Um, a lot of your, your ink drawings and your interest in comics feel less American, quite honestly, than they feel kind of less blunt and more cleverly acerbic, um, kind of in the Honoré Daumier way.

Is Daumier important to you? Do you remember when you first started paying attention?

I think as a younger person, I probably s- I think, this is something I say a lot for people who are, like, drawer types, that we just, like, love hunting for line.
