the longer you have in korea the better because these layovers can be really fun um but it really kind of changes what you could do depending on the length of your layover either stay inside the airport and there's lots to do there or even head into seoul because public transportation is great true and so if you do want to go into seoul uh you can take the airport railway uh the express train and takes about 45 minutes into the heart of Seoul the Seoul station or even Hongdae and with a long enough layover you can technically leave the airport explore Seoul and come back for your flight but remember you need to allow plenty of time for immigration transportation and getting back in through security so and Korea is pretty efficient about that too so depending on the season if there's a lot of people at the airport or not you I don't know.
NayeonPANELIST

It could be a very quick trip in and out of the city.
NayeonPANELIST

Jacob LeeHOST
12:55
But what if he needs to get all the way back to Gangnam or Hongdae where the actual heavy drinking is happening?
speaker_2GUEST
13:00
Right, a scooter won't cut it there.
Jacob LeeHOST
13:02
A scooter isn't going to get him 20 miles down a highway.

If you love to sing, you can even take part in a global student singing competition yourself, of course, to show off your K-pop and skills.

Sinchon was once the heart of Seoul's student and underground music scene in the 1990s before Hongdae and Seongsu stole some of its spotlight.
Brian JuHOST
4:13
Now, the district is hoping a new generation of young people can bring Sinchon back into the spotlight one festival at a time.
Brian JuHOST
4:22
Now, let's think about that as we take a song break by Sandara Park from, you know, 21.
CynthiaGUEST

A gathered neighborhood for colleges, such as? Yes.
IrisHOST

Sogang University, Hongdae is pretty close as well.
IrisHOST
21:05
Just imagining the atmosphere there.
IrisHOST
21:08
Very not something I'm familiar with.
TaeHOST

...
TaeHOST

so, um, there was a comedy show in Hongdae this past, uh...
TaeHOST
1:46
What was that? Back in May?
GibsonHOST
1:47
It was, it was May.
Emilee PetersmarkGUEST
25:44
Um, but I actually...
Emilee PetersmarkGUEST
25:46
I returned to Korea a couple years later and played my first show at, um, a coffee shop in Hongdae, um, that is known for platforming, like, unknown artists basically.
Emilee PetersmarkGUEST
26:00
Um, and that was, like, incredibly cool.
Emilee PetersmarkGUEST
26:03
I got to play to, like, a full house of people who spoke very little English.
BellaGUEST
58:29
And I get it, you know.
BellaGUEST
58:31
And so I think for me, like even though they have some plus size stores, I think in like Hongdae or Itaewon, even those stores, because it's smaller, like it's like not like, you know, a top 10.
BellaGUEST
58:44
It's not like that.
BellaGUEST
58:45
It's like literally smaller stores.
Peris KagiriHOST
22:23
Yeah.
CooperGUEST
22:24
Because I think it's easier to just work in an English academy and live in Itaewon or Hongdae, you know? Yeah.
Peris KagiriHOST
22:29
I
CooperGUEST

think that's like, I mean, and there's nothing wrong with that either.

A tourist guide takes them to cool places in Seoul or Incheon or other places, and the bus brings them back just in time for their next flight.
BomiGUEST
4:53
So before, Korea may have been only a short stop between two flights, but now transit passengers can visit a royal palace, try street food at a traditional market, visit Hongdae, take a ferry, or even look across the border into, like, North Korea.
SJHOST
5:09
All right.
SJHOST
5:09
So, um, from what I remember, from Incheon International Airport to the middle of the city, it should probably take you about, like, an hour maybe and change.

What about Seoul, though?
BomiGUEST

So there's a four-hour afternoon tour to Hongdae, so there travelers get to see street fashion, cafes, music, small shops, and young crowds.
BomiGUEST

It gives them a completely different first impression of Seoul when compared to palaces.
