Welcome to day one of the Aki Basho September Grand Sumo Tournament from Tokyo at the National Sumo Stadium.

Great first day of sumo.

Yokozuna Hoshoryu announced he was Kyujo for the tournament, which was kind of expected.

It was a hard matchup first up.

Toshori is apparently a uni-sumo wrestler of note, so not an easy fight on his first affair, but good things for both of them to come.

So that's it for day one of Aki Basho.

My pick, look, I'm going to say Kirishima at this stage, but I tell you what, Atami Fuji and Aonishiki, they will be in it to the end.

Tonight we turn our attention to the Aki Basho.

15 days of brutal competition, huge clashes, surprise upsets, hopefully, and of course the eternal question, who has actually got what it takes to lift the Emperor's Cup? Joining me tonight, as always, is my co-host, my brother, and the man who has somehow convinced himself that his opinions on Sumo are worth listening to, my brother, Lewis.

But, you know, his record in Juryo, I mean, 10-5, 9-6, 11-4.

Those are the last three Basho.

So I expect him, um, he may not get a Double digit number, but I expect him to win over quite a few guys just because of his size, and people don't know how to fight him quite yet.

But I will be excited to see if his size and everything dominates in, uh, Maka- Makuchi, especially the, the lower ranked guys that happen to be smaller in stature, or bigger in stature, who knows? Um, but then that just leaves one more rank, right?
