Homiletics

From 20- 2010 to 2016, I was the director of the MDiv program at Notre Dame.

And now you are currently, uh, listed, here it is, visiting associate professor, director of the Martin Program in Homiletics and Liturgics.

Yes.

And you're an expert on everything [laughs] Greek and Lat- patristics, uh, the thought.

He also served as assistant bishop and later bishop of the Iowa District of the American Lutheran Church.

In 1979, he joined the faculty of Wartburg Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa, as a professor of, uh, he was a professor, and I had to stop and look up this word, a professor of homiletics.

Homiletics, yes, which makes sense.

I had to look it up.

It is the art of preparing and delivering sermons.

And in our short time together, I wanna talk instead about the art of preaching.

Homiletics is the art of preaching.

Okay? And so there's a tension at play whenever we enter into a pulpit.

And, and we can't, we dare not minimize the science of it.

I'm your host, Reverend Dr. Katie Givens Kime, and today on Day 1, we are delighted to welcome back the Reverend Dr. Jason Byassee, senior pastor of Timothy Eaton Memorial Church in Toronto, Ontario.

A former professor of preaching at Vancouver School of Theology and holder of the Butler Chair in Homiletics, Jason is a prolific author and thought leader in the areas of church revitalization, biblical interpretation, and Christian leadership.

His work has been featured in Christian Century, Sojourners, and other leading publications.

Jason Byassee, welcome back to Day 1.
