Did she? She went to Home Ec.

She threw up at Home Ec, remember? Yeah.

Like,

all right, now we're going to open up this bug without gloves or aprons or

anything.

Is that what that class was, Home Ec? Yeah.

The lady with the burn face.

People hadn't thought in those terms before.

We had home economics, and we had doctors and height studies, and all of these things were coalescing at once at the same time that food was more and more being made in factories.

People were using cookbooks and written recipes instead of just doing what they'd learned before.

All of these things were just transforming Americans' relationships to food and often making it more distant, more formal, making people less likely to trust themselves or certainly to trust their own kind of pleasurable relationships to food.

Yeah, it really was.

It really grew...

I mean, what grew out of eugenics was the home economics movement.

Like, this really, you know, many of the early practitioners of home economics had started as eugenicists who were so interested in optimizing their environment to create the most perfect people that they could as they saw it.

I remember every moment of September 11th.

I remember going into Home EC.

I remember waking up and watching my mom cry because we moved from New York in 1998 My dad helped design the restaurant that was on floor 107 in the tower too.

So my family knew people that worked there.

I went to Berea College, and I had a great time meeting new people, getting to just get a lot of community experience, things like that.

So I started off my career in extension as an extension agent for Family and Consumer Science.

And I like to joke that means I'm a grandma.

That's the home ec field.

What would you recommend for introduction?

If you wanted to read essays and nonfiction, go to a book called Home Economics.

If you want to read poetry, of which he was a great master, read, maybe start with the Manifesto of the Mad Farmer Liberation Front.

And if you want to read one of the great novels of our time, his great book, Jaber Crow, is on the very short list of my favorite novels I've ever read.
