Holocaust survivors

He writes, my first byline in the Boston Globe appeared long before I became a columnist.

A letter to the editor I had written was published On January the 2nd, 1986, my most recent byline in the Globe appeared two weeks ago above a column headlined, The Politics of an Auschwitz Survivor.

The Politics of an Auschwitz Survivor's Son is the title.

Like that letter to the editor 35 years ago, it represented values that I absorbed from my father's example and instruction.

A few hours after this column appeared online, my father, who had tested positive for COVID-19, was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Tel Aviv where my mother was already a patient in the COVID ward.

Um, my parents are Holocaust survivors.

They were actually married immediately after the war, and I was born in Poland.

I was 2 years old when my parents emigrated to Australia, um, so that they could be as far away from the Churban as possible.

[laughs] Before shifting to law.

Uh, I didn't like architecture for all sorts of reasons.

But-- and my parents said, "Look," you know, my parents being Holocaust survivors, "You've gotta have a profession.

You've gotta survive." So they said, "Be a lawyer, and you can be a, a, a lawyer in our family business." So I did law.
