Hollywood Freeway

Hoping to be a, a record year for this fundraiser.

If you're driving on the 101, uh, Hollywood Freeway right now, looking up at the Universal Hilton, you might be seeing people rappelling off the side of the building.

Looks like another, uh, group is about to go down.

So it's a very, very exciting, very, very exciting [laughs] afternoon here, um, that's been developing, um, all day long and to a really great fundraising event.

That's what our story's about.

That and the Hollywood Freeway, that swift and terrifying facility built by man not for the convenience of men, but for the convenience of machines.

It's the most heavily traveled road in the world.

It knows death intimately, almost daily.

That's the Hollywood Public Library on Ivar Street where a payphone got used to order a girl from an outcall service.

The Hollywood Freeway, the 101, had been cut through the northeast corner of the neighborhood in the early 1950s, and it's what made the whole operation work.

You're in Glendale in 15 minutes.

There's the Patterson suit.

This was actually the Hollywood Freeway over by Quangan Baram.

We shot out there at night, and then ILM put in this wonderful, wonderful shot of the Rockies.

And we wanted, again, we wanted a barrier of civilization.

We call it the Hollywood Freeway.
